Living a Healthy Life
Important Terms: health, wellness, prevention, Healthy People 2010, health literacy, heredity, environment, peers, culture, media, risk behaviors, cumulative risks, ABSTINENCE!!!
I. The Importance of Good Health
A. Health - physical, mental/emotional and social well being.
B. Wellness - overall well-being (physical, Mental/Emotional, Social)
C. Health Continuum - used to measure level of wellness. Your health at at any
moment is a point on the continuum.
1. right side = healthy behavior, long healthy life, happy
2. left side = unhealthy behavior, illness accidents, injury, early death
II. Promoting your Health
A. The decisions you make each day......affect your health (T/F)
B. Factors that affect your health:
1. sleep 8 hours 6. avoid alcohol, tobacco, drugs
2. eat breakfast 7. ABSTINENCE
3. good nutrition 8. manage stress
4. physical activity 9. good relationships
5. maintain healthy weight 10. safe behaviors
C. Prevention (KEY TO WELLNESS) - actions you take to prevent illness/ injury
D. Health Education - being informed helps in decision making
E. Healthy People 2010 - nationwide health plan designed to improve health of entire nation by year 2010.
F. Health Literacy - understand and be able to use health information
1. be a critical thinker/ problem solver
2. be a responsible/ productive citizen
3. be a self thinker/ evaluate/ seek information
4. be an effective communicator....be able to express your knowledge
III. The Health Triangle
A. Three Elements of Health:
1. Physical - how well your body functions
2. Mental/ Emotional - feelings and ability to process information
3. Social - how you get along with others
****all three elements are equally important***

A. Heredity: traits/ characteristics biologically passed on to you by parents
B. Environment: your surroundings
1. Physical Environment - home, neighborhood, work, school
2. Social Environment - family, friends, co-workers, classmates
3. Cultural Environment - beliefs, customs, behaviors of a group
C. Attitude - the way you view situations
D. Behavior - actions you take daily
E. Media - radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, books, internet
F. Technology - screening, treatments, things that improve our everyday life have good and bad effects on your health
V. Understanding Health Risks
A. 1st Step - understand what risk is and how it effects your health
B. 2nd Step - evaluate your lifestyle
C. Avoiding Risks - most teenagers avoid risk by:
1. wearing safety belts
2. not smoking, drinking, using drugs
3. engaging in physical activity daily (usually 3 to 4 times a week for 60 minutes)
4. ABSTINENCE
D. Cumulative Risks - increase chances of negative consequences with each added risks
VI. Abstaining from risk behaviors
A. ABSTINENCE - avoiding harmful behaviors. Abstinence is the only way to completely avoid negative consequences.
B. Abstaining from drug/ alcohol
1. You can avoid: addiction, bodily injury, death, social isolation, legal consequences
C. Abstaining from sexual activity until marriage
1. you can avoid: unplanned pregnancy, single parenthood, STD's/ STI's, HIV/AIDS, guilt, regret, rejection, emotional scarring
